ORGANIZATIONAL
STRUCTURE
The Geological
Survey of Pakistan functions as an attached department in the Federal
Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Resources. It is the only Federal
organization headquartered at Quetta - the capital of Balochistan
province which constitutes 40 percent of Pakistan's land mass with
only 5 percent of its population but exhibiting varied array
of geological features and mineralization processes. The Quetta
office of the GSP houses the main museum, the Balochistan Division
and the Hydrogeology Division.
With the progressive
increase in scope and magnitude of work, some of the GSP's activities
have been regionalised for achieving more effective implementation
of its mapping programme and to have better and closer liaison with
the provincial authorities. Consequently regional offices have been
opened at Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar and a camp office
at Muzaffarabad in Azad Jammu & Kashmir. The main research facility
of the GSP- the national Geoscience Research Complex has been established
at Islamabad. Presently it comprises the Geoscience Laboratory (GeoLab)
and the Geodata Centre of Pakistan (GDCP). In future it will also
house the Regional Geoscience Research & Training Centre (RGRTC).
The GSP's newly created Environmental Geology Division is also located
in Islamabad.
The technical
activities of the Department are organized in to Programme Divisions
based broadly on the basis of research & data needs of the country
required to pursue sustainable development policies leading to enhanced
economic competitiveness of Pakistan. These divisions are in turn
made up of branches, sections, groups and units within which project
teams operate based on scientific discipline, geographical focus
or the market demand.
