BALOCHISTAN

Regional Geological Mapping

An area of about 6,510 sq.km. (1,590 sq. km. of Balochistan, which is to be mapped by Sindh office, has been included in this total area. Previously it was shown in Sindh province) will be mapped as under:

  1. Regional geological mapping and mineral investigation of toposheet Nos.30 P/6 & 10, (1,280 sq.km), in Chagai District, Balochistan.
  2. Geological mapping and mineral investigation of toposheet No. 39 E/6, (640 sq.km), Zhob District, Balochistan
  3. Geological mapping and mineral investigation of toposheet No. 39 E/15, (640 sq.km), Zhob District, Balochistan.
  4. Geological mapping and mineral investigation of toposheet No. 34 K/14, (640 sq.km), Mastung and Kalat districts, Balochistan.
  5. Geological mapping and mineral investigation of toposheet No. 34 O/11, (640 sq.km.) Dhaddar/ Kachi District, Balochistan.
  6. Geological mapping and mineral investigation of Bibargi quadrangle 34 O/4 (640 sq.km.)
  7. Geological mapping and mineral investigation of Johan quadrangle 34 K/15 (440 sq.km.)
  8. Geological mapping and mineral investigation of topographic sheet Nos.31 K/11,15 & 16,(1590 sq.km Gwadar District.

PUNJAB

Regional Geological Mapping

An area of about 2,560 sq. km. will be mapped on 1:50,000 scale in various parts of Punjab. The details of which are as under:-

  1. Compilation of district geological and mineral resource report on Mianwali District.
  2. Regional geological mapping on 1:50,000 scale and environmental geological studies of Okara area (toposheet No.44 F/9), Okara District, Punjab.
  3. Regional geological mapping of 43 C/13, 14 & 16.

Economic Geology

  1. Investigation and evaluation of silica sand resources of Salt Range area.
  2. Exploration for iron and other associated minerals in the Precambrian shield rocks in Kirana area, Punjab.

Urban and Environmental Geology

  1. Investigations for urban geology and environment concerns of Sialkot area (43 L/7 and 11), Sialkot District, Punjab, Pakistan.

Basic and Applied Research

  1. Continuation of studies on foraminiferal biostratigraphy of Upper Indus Basin with particular reference to Kala Chitta Range, Hazara Mountains and Samana Range.

Geophysical Investigations

  1. Deep resistivity soundings for basement delineation from Lahore to Khushab.
  2. Detailed geophysical investigation over an aero magnetic anomaly near Shekhupura for metallic mineralization.

NWFP

Regional Geological Mapping

An area of about 1,600 sq. km. will be mapped on 1:50,000 scale in various parts of NWFP. The details of which are as under:-

    Regional geological mapping and preliminary mineral investigation of Manduri Quadrangle (38 K/7), North Waziristan Agency.
  2. GSP/NWFP/RG-2
    Regional geological mapping and preliminary investigations of Gurguri Quadrangle (38 K/15), North Waziristan Agency.
  3. GSP/NWFP/RE-3
    Regional geological mapping and mineral investigation of Karrang Quadrangle (43 A/15), Swat, Kohistan.

Geological mapping and chromite and PGE investigations in Razmak Quadrangle (toposheet No.38 H/14), FATA.

Economic Geology

  1. GSP/NWF/EG-1
    Evaluation studies of manganese deposits associated with melange zone of Waziristan igneous complex, NWFP.
  2. GSP/NWFP/EG-2
    Study of sulphide mineralization along the MMT melange zone in Swat-Kohistan and Hazara area.
  3. GSP/NWFP/EG-3
    Study of iron ore deposits of Nizampur area, District Nowshera, NWFP.

ISLAMABAD

  1. Groundwater investigations in Rawalakot area, AJK- a special project on the request of the Government of Azad Jammu & Kashmir.
  2. Geotechnical evaluation of alternate sites of Margala Hill limestone mining near Islamabad.
  3. Glaciological and melt water regime assessment in Northern Pakistan.
  4. Landslide investigations in Murree area.

SINDH

Regional Geological Mapping

An area of about 1,760 sq. km. will be mapped as under:-

  1. Geological mapping of toposheet Nos.35 M/5,6 & 9, Larkana District, Sindh.
  2. Geological mapping of toposheet Nos.35 O/3,5; 35 M/3 & 4 and 35 N/8, Dadu & Larkana districts.
  3. Urban geological mapping of Hyderabad Sindh.

Economic Geology

  1. Evaluation of dolomite- in Sindh.
  2. Evaluation & assessment of clays (Fuller's Earth) in Sindh.
  3. Study of mud volcanoes in Mekran region including geothermic chemical isotope possibility of precious metals.
  4. Geochemical sampling in ophiolite region north of Bela for sulphide minerals.

Geophysical Investigations

  1. Magnetic survey (semi detailed) to delineate the zone of possible mineralization within Nagarparker basement complex.
  2. Resistivity survey for groundwater resources in Hyderabad region.

NORTHERN AREAS

Regional Geological Mapping

An area of 640 sq. km. will be mapped on 1:50,000 scale in Northern Area, the details of which are as under:

  1. Geological mapping and mineral investigation of Dassu area (toposheet No.43 E/7), Northern Pakistan.

GEOSCIENCE LAB. ISLAMABAD

Basic & Applied Research

  1. Groundwater investigations for fluorosis and bone deformity cases in Kalalan Wala and Kot Asadullah areas. Kasur and Lahore Districts, Punjab with special emphasis on toxic elements (3- year project).
  2. Geochemistry of drinking water in Rawalpindi, Jhelum and Gujrat and its impact on human health (3-year project).
  3. Petrological study of Satpara and surrounding areas, Skardu, North Pakistan.
  4. Genesis of Sardi Formation, Salt Range, Punjab.
  5. Heavy metal pollution and magnetic susceptibility in soils of Rawalpindi-Islamabad.
  6. Preparation of "Preliminary Metallogenic Map of Southern Axial Belt, Balochistan on 1:1,000,000 scale (1 cm=10 km or 1" = 15.78 miles)".

As per the minutes of meeting signed by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Resources, Government of Pakistan, GSP and JICA, Japan the following training projects will be taken up. Four to five short-term JICA experts will visit Pakistan for the following programme:

  1. Calibration and maintenance of equipment.
  2. Installation and on-the-job operational training on ICP-MS.
  3. Development of new analytical methods.
  4. Geological and mineral investigation in the Northern Areas.

International Collaboration

  1. "Training on gems and gemmology for certification", by French experts under the scientific and cultural programme between Governments of Pakistan and France.
  2. "Training on field mapping and cartography" to the GSP researchers by French instructors.

General Services

  1. Analytical and cartographic support to GSP's mapping and exploration projects.
  2. Research support in specialized disciplines for GSP's mapping & exploration projects.
  3. Preparations for ISO 17025 certification.

Publications

Two numbers of GeoLab's research journal GEOLOGICA will be published.

AJK

An area of about 3,380 sq. km. will be mapped on 1:50,000 scale in AJK, the detail of which are as under:-
