KARACHI — A high-profile member of Karachi’s legal fraternity, Advocate Khawaja Shamsul Islam, was fatally shot in what authorities believe may have been a targeted attack outside a mosque in the upscale Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Phase 6 area on Friday.
The senior lawyer was leaving the mosque after prayers when unknown gunmen ambushed him and his son, opening fire at close range, according to South Zone police officials. Both were critically injured and rushed to a nearby private hospital, where Khawaja Shamsul Islam was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
His son, who sustained several gunshot wounds, remains in critical condition and is undergoing emergency treatment. Hospital officials have confirmed the severity of his injuries but have yet to issue a formal medical update.
Police Probe Possible Targeted Killing
Investigators have sealed off the crime scene and launched a full inquiry. While the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, initial assessments by law enforcement suggest the attack may have been premeditated. No arrests have been made so far.
DIG South described the killing as “highly concerning” and stated that CCTV footage from the area is being reviewed. Forensic teams are also collecting ballistic evidence in hopes of tracing the assailants.
