Karachi Underpass Tragedy Three Dead as Bus Plows Into Motorcycles

KARACHI — A high-speed passenger bus turned a busy Karachi underpass into a scene of devastation Monday morning, killing three people — including a woman — and critically injuring another, according to police reports.

The collision happened at the Drigh Road underpass when the bus rammed into two motorcycles, sending victims sprawling on the roadway. Witnesses described chaos as commuters rushed to help the injured while the driver fled the scene.

Police later arrested the driver near Natha Khan Bridge and impounded the vehicle.

Deadly Pattern of Road Accidents

The crash is part of a disturbing trend: Karachi’s roads have become increasingly dangerous, especially for motorcyclists and pedestrians. This year alone, more than 500 people have lost their lives in traffic accidents across the city, with heavy vehicles — buses, dumpers, and trailers — involved in a significant portion of these fatalities, according to a recent police report.

The report shows:

  • 60 deaths linked to trucks
  • 25 deaths from bus crashes
  • 20 fatalities in dumper-related incidents
  • 44 deaths caused by water tankers
  • 58 killed in car collisions

Women accounted for 51 of the total deaths.

Public Outrage Over Traffic Safety

Monday’s incident has reignited criticism of Karachi’s traffic management and lax enforcement of road safety regulations. Earlier this month, public anger boiled over when residents torched seven dumper trucks after two siblings were crushed to death on Rashid Minhas Road.

Despite repeated tragedies, Karachi’s roads remain chaotic, with reckless driving, unregulated heavy vehicles, and poor infrastructure contributing to a mounting death toll.

Authorities have yet to announce whether new safety measures will follow this latest crash.
