Punjab’s Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned of potential flooding in major rivers as the province prepares for the seventh phase of this year’s monsoon season, expected to start on August 13.
Rising River Levels a Key Concern
Officials say the Sutlej, Ravi, Chenab, and Jhelum rivers — along with connected streams — could see dangerous surges in water levels once the new rain system hits. The warning comes amid a particularly active monsoon period, which has already strained parts of the province’s flood defenses.
Government Moves Into Emergency Mode
On the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, all divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, and provincial departments have been told to activate emergency protocols. Agencies spanning agriculture, irrigation, health, forestry, livestock, transport, and local government have been instructed to complete advance preparations.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia has ordered round-the-clock staffing at control rooms, placed Rescue 1122 teams on high alert, and called for the relocation of both residents and livestock from vulnerable riverbanks before water levels peak.
Public Safety Measures Urged
The PDMA is urging residents to avoid entering rivers, canals, or other open water bodies during the rains. People are also advised to stay connected with local authorities for real-time weather updates and to fully comply with evacuation orders if issued.
With parts of Punjab already waterlogged from previous monsoon waves, authorities say the next few days will be critical in determining whether the region can avoid major flooding.
